One of my themes for this year is relationships. I’ve decided that to invest in relationships I need to be around more people. Much of my time is spent at home where most of the magic of Dragonfly Direction is born. So I decided to spend time in some of the groups I belong to on Social Media. In one of the groups someone posed a question, “is it better to focus on one thing to build your business or multiple things?”. I responded and shared that focusing on one thing at a time is best because you will naturally go toward the focus of your thoughts. Let me explain.
I believe that what you spend your time thinking about will be the direction of your life. That’s not to say that if you think about winning the lottery you will hit the jackpot, but you are more likely to win on a scratch off. Thus, focus guides your outcomes.
For instance, if you want a promotion or new clients, or maybe a new relationship: change will occur when you focus on what is needed in order to have the thing you desire; because there is a shift in your thinking and focus. That shift is necessary because its almost as the thing in focus has already happened. As a result your decisions moving forward, are improved to be in alignment with your new focus.
It’s the same reason a pilot looks at the end of the runway rather than the ground below when they land an aircraft. If they looked at the ground below the outcome would be less than favorable. Rather (and thankfully) they look at the end of the runway because that is where they are going. We often do the same thing in our lives.
Oftentimes, we see this show up in a negative way. We spend time stressing over the worst case scenario or situation because we are afraid. Becoming so focused on it leads us to the exact place we feared in the beginning. Then we’re surprised that we are where we are. This can be manifested in the whole “why me” victim thinking. I’m not really sure why we’re surprised because we spent a lot of energy mapping out the situation in our heads before it happened. Lesson: be careful what you think about. There’s a difference between being prepared for the worst and expecting it to happen.
The good news is that this energy can also be used for favorable outcomes. Dare to dream and believe that you are enough to make the good things in life happen for you too. I believe that you, me, we are fully equipped to be the people we are called to be in our own unique way. If you are willing to remain open, let go of your old perspective, and have faith; then this can work for you too.
Letting go simply means that you are willing to have faith and courage. Understand, what was, no longer holds importance in your life. You are taking action to move forward; focus on where you are going. This means taking risks. It’s not easy but it is completely possible.
Are you ready to take a step in faith and claim a piece of the life you desire? I hope so. I’m reminded of a quote that really resonates with me by Erma Bombeck: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me’.” This is something that guides me in my life, to do something with the time I am blessed to have here. What are you willing to risk?
Life is too short to hold on to grudges and focus on what went wrong. While it’s important to evaluate failures; it’s more important to learn from them, let go and move forward focusing on what can be rather than what was. Now it’s your turn. What one thing will you focus on to move you forward in your current situation?
