It’s the middle of the night, I can’t sleep so I open my eyes while I lay in bed. I see a hint of light from outside the window peeking in through the blinds. This leaves several lines on the wall, it almost looks like a piece of paper. This gets me thinking about all the beautiful things that surround us everyday but we miss because we are distracted with technology or the other things we have on our list of to do’s. I begin to write something beautiful in my mind as I reflect.
There is beauty in ordinary things, like moonlight through the window blinds in the middle of the night. Beauty isn’t only through vision though, it is experienced through sound, taste and touch. That night, I was at the beach. I had the window open just enough to hear the sound of the ocean off in the distance along with raindrops. I could smell the sea air in the room and was nestled in my husbands arms strong and soft.
Today heavy snow is falling outside my window. Everyone in my house is fast a sleep, warm in their beds providing me an opportunity to sit an listen to the stillness that generally acompanies fresh falling snow. I could feel the bitter cold inside my nose and my chest and the peaceful beauty was spread as far as I could see. If today was the last day I had on this earth, I would count myself richly blessed.
I have seen much of the country, heard a newborn baby cry the breath of life, tasted some incredible foods, felt the touch of my soulmate, cried, hurt and overcome obstacles. I have lived. Yet I am not done. There are still many places I want to visit, new friends to make, new family members to meet, new tastes to indulge in and more love to give to my husband. This new year is exciting and I am ready to reach the goals on my 2014 vision board. This year will be a year of great successes and much beauty.
When you find yourself wide awake in the middle of the night, embrace the beauty that surrounds you. Take an inventory of all the blessings you have in the moment. Be in the moment and you can gently fall back asleep realizing that whatever it was that woke you up, probably wasn’t so bad after all.
